Thyroid Surgery
Thyroid surgery removes part or all of the thyroid gland to treat nodules, enlarged goitres, hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. Each plan is tailored to imaging, biopsy results and patient preference.

When this procedure is used
- Suspicious or large thyroid nodules
- Multinodular goitre with pressure or cosmetic concerns
- Confirmed or suspected thyroid cancer
- Selected cases of hyperthyroidism
What to expect
Assessment
Ultrasound, thyroid function tests and fine-needle biopsy where indicated, with vocal cord assessment before surgery.
The procedure
Performed under general anaesthetic through a small low-neck incision. Hemi- or total thyroidectomy depending on diagnosis.
Recovery
Usually one night in hospital. Calcium and thyroid hormone are monitored, with long-term follow-up as needed.
