Gallbladder Surgery
Laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder is the standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones and gallbladder disease. The procedure is performed through small incisions, with most patients returning home within 24 hours.

When this procedure is used
- Symptomatic gallstones and recurrent biliary colic
- Acute or chronic cholecystitis
- Gallbladder polyps requiring removal
- Biliary pancreatitis once stabilised
What to expect
Before surgery
Pre-operative assessment, blood tests and imaging review. Fasting from midnight before the procedure.
The procedure
Performed under general anaesthetic, usually laparoscopically through four small incisions. Typical theatre time is 45–90 minutes.
Recovery
Most patients are discharged the same day or after one night. Light activity resumes within days; full recovery within 1–2 weeks.
