Procedure
Gastroscopy (Upper GI Endoscopy)
Gastroscopy uses a thin flexible camera to examine the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. It allows direct visualisation, biopsy and targeted treatment of upper digestive symptoms.

When this procedure is used
- Persistent reflux, heartburn or indigestion
- Difficulty or pain on swallowing
- Unexplained nausea, vomiting or upper abdominal pain
- Iron deficiency anaemia and suspected GI bleeding
What to expect
Preparation
Fasting for at least six hours before the procedure. Most regular medication can continue — specific guidance is provided.
The procedure
Performed as a day case under sedation. The examination itself usually takes 10–20 minutes.
After the procedure
Short recovery from sedation. Findings and any biopsy plan are discussed before discharge.
