Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy examines the entire colon and rectum using a flexible camera. It is used for diagnosis, colorectal cancer screening, polyp removal and surveillance of known bowel conditions.

When this procedure is used

  • Change in bowel habit or rectal bleeding
  • Unexplained abdominal pain or anaemia
  • Colorectal cancer screening and surveillance
  • Follow-up of polyps or inflammatory bowel disease

What to expect

Bowel preparation

A prescribed laxative regimen is taken the day before the procedure to clear the colon — full instructions are provided.

The procedure

Performed under sedation as a day case, usually taking 20–40 minutes. Polyps may be removed and biopsies taken during the same examination.

After the procedure

Recovery from sedation, then discussion of findings. Histology results and next steps are reviewed at follow-up.
