Appendicectomy

Appendicectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, most often performed urgently for acute appendicitis. It is usually completed laparoscopically through small incisions.

When this procedure is used

  • Acute appendicitis
  • Recurrent right lower abdominal pain with imaging changes
  • Appendix mass or abscess after initial treatment
  • Incidental appendix pathology found at surgery

What to expect

Assessment

Clinical examination, blood tests and imaging (ultrasound or CT) to confirm diagnosis and exclude alternatives.

The procedure

Performed under general anaesthetic, usually laparoscopically through three small incisions. Typical theatre time 30–60 minutes.

Recovery

Most patients are discharged within 24–48 hours. Return to light activity within a week; full recovery in 2–4 weeks.
